{Review} All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover

about the book

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of It Ends with Us—whose writing is “emotionally wrenching and utterly original” (Sara Shepard, New York Times bestselling author of the Pretty Little Liars series)—delivers a tour de force novel about a troubled marriage and the one old forgotten promise that might be able to save it.

Quinn and Graham have a perfect love story, but their unique connection is threatened by their imperfect marriage. The memories, mistakes, and secrets that they have built up over the years are now tearing them apart, day by heartbreaking day. The one thing that could save them might also be the very thing that pushes their marriage beyond the point of repair. So do they risk it? Is their history worth saving?

All Your Perfects is a profound novel about a damaged couple struggling with a relatable issue – infertility – whose potential future hinges on promises made in the past. In Colleen Hoover’s inimitable style and brilliant narrative voice, this heartbreaking page-turner asks: Can a resounding love with a fairytale beginning survive a lifetime between two imperfect people?

My Thoughts

Saying marriage is hard is an understatement, and there are often times of heartache that are not always easy to survive. Colleen tells the story of a couple deeply in love and trying to survive the biggest crisis of their marriage. Although I personally have never dealt with infertility, it didn’t make the story any less relatable and real and heartbreaking. It was like I was right there with Quinn and Graham and felt their pain. That’s what Colleen’s books do to me every time – they make me feel and imagine myself in the same situation as her characters. I always feel like I’m holding my breathe and bracing myself for the inevitable heartache that I know is coming. But it’s such a good heartache, because she has yet to disappoint me in the end. This book opened up my eyes to the pain of infertility and I believe it’s a book that could help marriages – it’s that powerful.

You don’t want to miss this one. Another unique and incredible love story – she’s still on her game – and she’s proven it once again with All Your Perfects.

Bottom Line

Beautiful, emotional and truly unforgettable. A marriage-in-crisis story to rival all others.

About the book

Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.

The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines, when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.

Poignant and powerful, Without Merit explores the layers of lies that tie a family together and the power of love and truth.

my thoughts

She did it again. Colleen Hoover managed to write another uniquely different story, unlike anything else she’s written. A story more focused on family and forgiveness, and less on romance (don’t worry – there’s still romance, it IS a CoHo book after all). I know I say I would read anything this woman writes, which is true. But reading this book was a whole different CoHo experience.

Merit keeps all her family’s secrets to herself, but eventually a person can only take so much before they explode. To add to it, Merit doesn’t feel like anyone in her family cares about her at all, which broke my heart. She’s angry and quirky, but endearing at the same time.

There’s a meaningful message within the story – one that I feel many teens would benefit from reading. I don’t want to give away too much, because I feel that it’s a more enjoyable experience to read it without knowing too much. Do not be deterred by the fact that this is considered YA – it felt a lot like going back to Colleen’s early writing days (Slammed) as I was reading this book. If you are a fan of YA books, I definitely think you’ll enjoy it.

On the flip side, if you’re a long time fan of Colleen’s books, like myself, I want to advise that you go into this one with an open mind. She changed things up with this book – delivering something more than just angst-ridden romance (don’t get me wrong – I love her angst-ridden romances). This story is full of interesting characters, important issues and so much heart – it’s a book about life and forgiveness and finding peace within yourself. Though it was tough to read at times, Colleen manages to throw in some humor and light in her classic style. She gives the reader hope for better things. And she manages to pull off yet another beautiful masterpiece.

Bottom Line

A unique and hopeful story – one that leaves a lasting impression.

Mini Reviews {1}

Do you follow Vilma Iris? You should – I love her blog and Instagram. She started a monthly wrap up post, which is the inspiration for this new post. I’m slacking on the reviews lately, so I thought this would be a good way of sharing my thoughts on the books I’ve read recently, good or bad. I’m hoping by using this easier format – I’ll share my thoughts on the books I’ve read more often, since this IS a book blog. 😉

{Review} The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

about the book

Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn’s life unfolds through the decades—revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love—Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Filled with emotional insight and written with Reid’s signature talent, this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it takes—to face the truth.

My Thoughts

Honestly, I tried reading this book more than once. I received an early copy many months ago, and when I first picked it up, I couldn’t get into it. It didn’t feel like the kind of story I’m used to reading by TJR.

That’s because it’s NOT like her previous books. It was unique and absolutely fantastic. And kudos to her for the bravery to write something different. I’m so glad I gave it another chance. It wasn’t anything like I expected, but I still loved every word. In true TJR fashion, her writing is beautiful, and I became lost in the story and didn’t want to put it down. Evelyn is a character you want to love and hate simultaneously, and I was captivated by her life.

There are only a select few authors who’s books make me cry, and TJR is one of them. This book is really incredible, and I highly recommend picking up a copy!

Bottom Line

Truly unforgettable. I’m still thinking about the story weeks later.

{Review} Daisy in Chains

about the book

Famous killers have fan clubs.

Hamish Wolfe is no different. Locked up for the rest of his life for the abduction and murder of three young women, he gets countless adoring letters every day. He’s handsome, charismatic and very persuasive. His admirers are convinced he’s innocent, and that he’s the man of their dreams.

Who would join such a club?

Maggie Rose is different. Reclusive and enigmatic; a successful lawyer and bestselling true-crime writer, she only takes on cases that she can win.

Hamish wants her as his lawyer, he wants her to change his fate. She thinks she’s immune to the charms of a man like this. But maybe not this time . . .

Would you?

My Thoughts

Thank you Steph, for putting this book on my radar! I love when I find a new author to obsess over. This book was fantastic! Brilliant writing that kept me guessing and flying through the pages. And the ending completely surprised me – I love when that happens! I will definitely be reading more by this author in the future.

Bottom Line

A fast-paced suspense that will keep you guessing until the very end.
